The GEME program aims at preparing talented mining engineering students for global employment by enhancing their education with international study and work experiences. It features a student exchange program, scholarships, and internship opportunities with international mining companies. Mining engineering students from the participating universities can apply to become a part of GEME during any year of their undergraduate studies.
The program is structured so that GEMEs develop the necessary skills to adapt to varying work conditions and mature faster in their understanding of mining operations in global settings. With the added experiences, they will have the ability and skills to step onto the fast track to management positions while wielding a global view of the industry. In addition, the program is likely to enhance the visibility of the mining engineering profession among engineering students, which in turn positively affects the enrollment of mining engineers worldwide.
Both local and international mining companies will benefit from the burgeoning availability of a larger pool of mining engineering graduates.
The GEME program has been established under a consortium agreement between four major universities and funds provided by four mining companies. The program is administrated by a Program Coordinator and an Assistant at the Colorado School of Mines, USA, with an oversight from the Advisory Board consisting of members from mining companies and university professors.
